From the editors
This edition designed to provide dancers, dance teachers and concertmasters with all the music necessary for a complete classical ballet class. The author of this edition Natalia Shtempel has worked for many years as accompanist in the ballet class of the Choreographic secondary school in Novosibirsk, so she has got a great experience in setting classical ballet repertoire. Here you can find music of different genres and styles: fragments from ballets and operas, music, which seems to be suitable for making exercises, different improvisations by concertmasters (including several improvisations by Shtempel).
This educational aid includes five sections. The class begins with a traditional ballet exercises at the barre, starting with a several bar introduction. These bars in different keys immediately set the tempo and the mood of the exercise. The role of a concertmaster here seems to be very important!
The section «Adagio» includes music for making adagio at the barre and in the center (for senior classes). Variations are used in different types of movements: pliés, relevés, rond de jambe, etc.
The section “Coda” includes different musical fragments, which can be used in all types of pirouette turning exercises. Music in the section “Jumps” can be used in different jumping exercises — it just depends on a concertmaster’s musical sense, who has to feel when jump reaches its highest point to put a necessary musical accent.
