The Alfred Schnittke Collected Works Edition is a joint project of Compo-zitor • Saint Petersburg and the Ivashkin-Schnittke Archive at Goldsmiths, University of London. In this critical edition, each score has been checked against Schnittke’s manuscripts and existing publications of his music аnd has been edited by leading performers who collaborated with the composer.

Schnittke’s Concerto for piano and strings was written in 1979 and is the third of his four concertante piano works. The Сoncerto continues many of the ideas that had characterised Schnittke’s music through the 1970s, as far back as the First Symphony (1969-72).

Schnittke’s Concerto for piano and strings is dedicated to the pianist Vladimir Krainev (19442011), who gave the premiere at Great Hall of the Leningrad Philharmonia on 10 December 1979 with the Leningrad Philharmonic conducted by Alexander Dmitriev. Krainev also made the first recording of the work, with the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Saulius Sondeckis, released on LP in 1984 as Melodiya C10 22845 004.
