“Lieutenant Kizhe”, suite from the music to the film, op.60 refers to 1934. The project was conceived during S. S. Prokofiev’s visit to Moscow and Leningrad. Yuri Tynyanov’s short story of the same name was screened at the Byelorussia Cinema Studio “Belgoskino”. Prokofiev wrote in his article “The Subject I Search”: There is a project of working at the sound track to the film “Lieutenant Kizhe” (after Yu. Tynyanov’s short story of the same name). Just now negotiations are carried on with the “Belgoskino”.

Describing the year of 1933 in his “Autobiography” S. Prokofiev remembers: “Returning to Moscow I plunged into the work at the film “Lieutenant Kizhe”. I was sure music means were clear to me. I went to Leningrad for synching. I. O. Dunayevsky conducted that time. Unfortunately the culmination was changed perpetually, making the film intricate and hard for perception. The next year the symphony suite was created. It carried me away more than the music to the film, for I had to think over the construction and re-orchestration, so as refined logically joined themes.”

The suite “Lieutenant Kizhe” was firstly performed in Moscow on December 21, 1934 conducted by the author himself. The score was published in 1935 by the “A. Gutheil” company.
