This album is dedicated to the biography of the outstanding ballet dancer of the Leningrad — St. Petersburg ballet school, People’s Artist of the USSR Sergey Vasilievich Vikulov. He was the leading dancer of the Kirov Ballet in 60–70-s of the previous century. He won the first prize and Gold Medal at the 1st International Competition of Ballet Dancers in Varna, and one year later he possessed a diploma of Vatslav Nizhinsky and the title of the world’s best ballet dancer of 1965 given by the Paris Dance Academy.
He had a strict classical repertoire and European critics called him not once the best modern romantic dancer. His perfect dancing gave him an opportunity to demonstrate his pure lines of postures and his different, sometimes unbelievable supports in duets. His unique technical jumps and rotations made an image of “floating” in the air. He was also a talented actor with his viewpoint of each part, which helped him to make an unforgettable gallery of different images.
This edition includes rare photos from S. V. Vikulov’s family album which haven’t been published before. Some photos were kindly given by the St. Petersburg State Theatre and the Music Art museum (SPbGMTMI). We should like to say a special word of appreciation to A.Vikulov for his valuable help in finding the European reviews.
This book will be interesting to a general public as well as to the lovers of the ballet history of the past.We also hope that this edition will satisfy the tastes of the real ballet scholars.
