Richard Strauss (1864–1949) — the German composer and conductor. His father was known as the distinguished horn player, having inculcated passion for musical classicism and early romanticism in music.

Strauss started composing at six, while to seventeen he was already the author of several opuses performed in Munich.

Among Strauss' programmatic symphony and opera canvases there are the ones for the solo winds, i. e. two concertos for French horn and orchestra (1885, 1943) dedicated to the composer's father, Concerto for hautboy and orchestra (1954), Duet-concertino for clarinet and bassoon with strings and harp (1948), two sonatas for winds, serenade for thirteen wind instruments.
