Georgiy Vasilyevich SVIRIDOV (16.12.1915, Fatezh, now the Kursk region — 06.01.1998, Moscow) — the Russian composer. Most prominent musician of the 20th’s century second half, having addressed mainly to vocal genres, basing country folklore, old-fashioned romance, Russian church singing of the 17th century. Sviridov was the first to resort to S. A. Yesenin’s and B. L. Pasternak’s creation after they were prohibited in 1930–1950. Compositions: music comedy “The Sea Spread Wide” (1943), cantatas, oratorios, including “Poem to Yesenin’s Memory”, “Pathetic Oratorio”, “Kursk Songs”, “Snow Falls”, “Wooden Russia”, “Decembrists”, “Pushkin’s Garland”, “Songs of Hard Times”; romances, music to films, including “Don César de Bazan” (1957), “Blizzard” (1964; orchestra cycle “Music Illustrations to A. S. Pushkin’s novel “Blizzard”, 1974), “Forward, the Time” (1965).
