Vladimir Nikolayevich Sokolov (born in 1931), the Petersburgian composer, graduate of the Petersburg Conservatoire, where he studied cello at professor B. N. Burlakov and composition at O. A. Yevlakhov. Sokolov was awarded the privileged titles of the Honoured Art Worker of Russia, professor of the Art Criticism at the St.Petersburg State Cinema and Theatre University.

The composer's biases are mainly connected with the chamber-instrumental sphere. Among his opuses are two symphonies, oratorio “That was Russia to Live” to the folk verses, Concerto for tuba and orchestra, vocal cycle “Hour of the Soul” to the verses by Marina Tsvetayeva, three string quartets, trio for violin, bassoon and piano, quartet for flute, hautboy, clarinet and bassoon, sonata for flute and piano, solo sonatas for viola and violin, two sonatas for cello, sonata for bayan. Sokolov has been communicating for many centenaries with the scientific popular films studio (music to more than 250 pictures).

The Quartet No 2 for strings refers to 1994, having been firstly performed in 1996 at the Petersburg Composeres' House by the Petersburg Honoured String Quartet of the Petersburg Philharmonic Society. The composition was performed not once in this country and abroad.
