Yury Falik is one of the most performed St Petersburg composers. His musical style is crisp and clear, open emotional attitude and poetic musical language ensure the success that his works always had by the audience.
His works for choir gained vast popularity. Yury Falik developed his original choir style, his intoning is easily recognizable from the first bars of music.
The present work is a facsimile edition of the hand written score of the Concerto for soprano solo and mixed choir a cappella written by Falik on the verses of his favorite Silver Age poets, A. Akhmatova and L. Gumilev. Two movements on Akhmatova’s verses and outstanding by its sheer force final movement on Gumilev’s verses God’s Temple is at Heaven are composed in the limits of Russian orthodox music tradition. Sviridov’s polyfunctional chords and high soprano hovering over deep basses create the feeling oа huge spaces. The third movement of the cycle, Borough on the verses by N. Gumilev, contrasts the whole cycle, it is the real ‘hit’ of Russian choir repertoire. This is a kaleidoscopic change of musically contrasting material, satirical sketch of the small Russian city life. Bazaar and church, kisses and crosses swirling in the musical whirlwind.
This Concerto will undoubtedly will benefit greatly the choir repertoire and will be liked immensely by all professional musicians and amateurs.
