Russian Choral Music: Pushkin Settings. Two Centuries

Russian а cappella choral works setting words by Alexander Pushkin form а unique monument to the great Russian poet. Over the past two centuries they have enriched the world with many veritable chefs d’oeuvre in this particular musical genre. Pushkin's poetry has invariably attracted and continues to attract composers — both great masters and humble amateurs. The collection in the Russian National Library in St Petersburg alone contains some five hundred choral settings of the poet's verse.

The present edition contains works by composers of various schools and tendencies. Although stylistically distinct, they have all stood the test of time, are regularly performed and can, without exception, be considered among their composers' undoubted masterpieces, from Dargomyzhsky to Tchaikovsky, from Rimsky-Korsakov and Taneyev to Georgy Sviridov and Rodion Shchedrin, Sergey Slominsky and Yuri Falik...   

This edition is intended both for professional choirs and amateur groups. For the benefit of foreign performers the titles of the works are аlso given in English and Pushkin's verse is provided with а line-by-line transliteration.
