The cycle “Songs of Love” for voice and piano occupies the special place in Antonin Dvořac’s (1841–1904) creation. These songs appeared as the parts of the cycle “Cypresses”, consisting of eighteen songs to the verses of the Czech poet Gustav Pfleger-Morаvskу (1783–1875). The cycle “Cypresses” was composed in Summer 1865 during rather а short time. That was the youthful love for Josepha Čermac, his pupil. Josepha and her sister Anna were the jeweler’s daughters, 1iving in Prague. Later Anna became the composer's wife. Dvořak lovingly preserved the cycle “Cypresses”, though it was the time of boring self- doubts leading him sometimes to his own creations elimination. The cycle was left unpublished. Nevertheless

Dvořak applied to its themes in his operas and instrumental compositions. Four of the “Cypresses” were published under the ор. 2 in 1882. Finally in 1888 Dvořak decided to make the new edition of eight songs. In 1889 the cycle “Songs of Love” saw the world as ор. 83. Addressing the publisher Zimrok, Dvořak wrote: “Imagine а young man in love — here is their idea”.

Since that the “Songs of Love” enjoyed the popularity among Dvořac’s vocal compositions.
