Sergei Prokofiev had decided on the story of the same name by Fyodor Dostoevsky as an operatic subject in 1914; the work was completely finished in 1916. Prokofiev was the first who appealed to the prose of Dostoevsky in both Russian and foreign music. The libretto was written by the composer himself. The second author’s edition appeared in 1927.
The clavier of the opera (its second edition), arranged by Prokofiev for voice and piano in Russian, French and German languages, was published in 1930 by the Kusevitsky Russian music publishing house in Paris.
This edition is accomplished according to the agreement between the “Compozitor Publishing House” and the “Serge Prokofiev Estate”; it reproduces the rarity 1930 version exactly.
