Yevgeny Onegin — lyrical scenes by P. I. Tchaikovsky are constructed in three acts, seven scenes. A. S. Pushkin’s novel in verse of the same name was transformed to a libretto, the authorship of which is divided between K. Shylovsky and the composer himself.

However, that was the singer and teacher Yelizaveta Andreyevna Lavrovskaya to have prompted the idea of Pushkin’s Yevgeny Onegin to have been used for the new possible opera. Tchaikovsky’s letter to his brother referring to 1877 gives the evidence of the composer’s contemplations: “Last week I happened to dine at Mrs Lavrovskaya. Our conversation turned to the opera subjects. Quite of a sudden Lizaveta Andreyevna said: ‘Why not, but Yevgeny Onegin?’ I was rather astounded. Later Onegin came to my mind, making me think about this idea. The same very moment I darted home for to find Pushkin’s volume and to refresh his masterpiece in my mind. That was a sleepless night, however, it gave birth to the wonderful opera scenario with Pushkin’s poetical text.”

The premiere of Yevgeny Onegin took place on March 17, 1879 at the Moscow Maly Theatre. The opera was staged by the pupils of the Moscow Conservatoire. Nikolai Rubinstein was conducting the performance. Since the 90ies of the 19th century Yevgeny Onegin is on roll all over the world theatre stages. The main parts are performed by such masters as A. Nezhdanova, Ye. Katulskaya, G. Vishnevskaya as Tatiana, L. Sobinov, S. Lemeshev, N. Gedda (Lensky), M. Bocharov, V. Slivinsky, S. Leiferkus (Onegin).
The opera was screened in 1959 at the Lenfilm studio (producer R. Tikhomirov).
