The genre of symphony may be called the sphere of paramount importance in Ludwig van Beethoven’s (1770–1827) creation. The nine symphonies seem to embrace all the periods of the composer’s spiritual life. It’s quite evident to reveal Beethoven’s aesthetic finds and achievements in symphonic genre having influenced all the European musical tradition. Beethoven’s powerful energy determined his position amongst the greatest world masters.

The Fifth Symphony C minor, op. 67, was composed in 1805–1808 simultaneously with the Fourth and Sixth ones). The heroic tragical conception is embodied here as skillfully as to make the symphony be both significant for Beethoven’s biography and utmostly popular all over the world.

“The Fifth exposes the idea of struggle in the aspect peculiar to the tragical theatre of the Enlightment Age. That was the uncompomising combat between the human-being and the Destiny to be the base of the classical tragedy’s dramatic art and hence the musical drama of Gluck connected with it tightly. As to Beethoven he interprets this conflict the other way. The novelty introduced by Beethoven was the dynamical action leading to the human-being’s victory over the Destiny. Meanwhile, the Gluck drama solved the controversy by means of external forces coming to rescue the main personage. Beethoven’s elaboration in the Fifth shows the way from sulk to light”*. It was Really for the first time, when the principle of through-composed development (i. e. the intonational elaboration piercing the whole canvas) was used.

The premiиre took place in Vienna on December 22, 1808, attracting the special attention of the audience. The second performance in Leipzig a month later turned over a new leaf in the symphony existence.
