Pyotr Gekker — composer, graduate of the St. Petersburg Conservatoire, Honoured Art Worker of Russia, member of the Composers’ Union. The range of his partialities to modern music genres gives birth to symphonic poem, instrumental concerto, chamber music choreographic miniature, vocal cycles and music to drama performances, variety pieces and songs. The composer does not stop searching for new music elements, passionately imbibing novelties of modern music culture, sometimes plunging into the folklore depths of different ethnic cultures and epochs.
Gekker’s compositions are on roll at the Music Spring festivals, in philharmonic concerts. being transmitted by mass media in Russia and abroad.
Jewish spiritual life, inculcated in culture and history of these people, has been drawing Gekker, making him address to Yiddish folklore. Such are the texts to the Three Jewish Songs, lent from the collection Pearls of Yiddish Song: Favorite Folk, Art and Theatre Songs. — New York: The Education Department of the Workmen’s Circle, 1988. M. Byalik notices, that the songs touch by the combination of lyrical and ironical attitude to reality.
