Waltz-fantasy is one of the most popular compositions by Mikhail Glinka. The piece was created in 1839 having been intended for piano. Later it was orchestrated thrice.

The first orchestral edition belonged to G. German, the manager of concerts in Pavlovsk. That version was performed for many times in the Pavlovsk summer concerts since 1839. Therefore the Petersburgian music lovers called this waltz “The Pavlovsky One”. Sometimes it was signed as “The Melancholy Waltz” and “The Fantastic Waltz” (the translation of the word “Valse-fantaisie”, which associated with the meaning phantastic).

The second instrumental variant was made by Glinka for his concert in Paris. That variant was given the title “Scherzo”. Both of them were lost later.

It was the end of winter 1856, when Glinka composed the third orchestration of the piece not long before his departure abroad, It was considered to be the final version. The composition was also called “Scherzo”, however the author pointed “Walse-fantaisie” in brackets.

The first performance took place on April 5, 1856. Thus the final author' s orchestral version of Waltz-fantasy underwent its premiere. Неге we represent the publication of that exact edition.
