Sergei Mikhailovich Slonimsky (1932–2019) is one of the leading composers belonging to the modern Russian music, the author of works in different genres, from operas and symphonies to cinema sound-tracks.

The Nineth Symphony (1987) is a large-scaled canvas of two movements. Its first movement is based on the theme akin to the Russian drawling song. The researcher of Slonimsky's creation O. Devyatova compares it to the naked wound of the heart undergoing the unbearable torment. The Second movement becomes the kind of battle-field, where the last fight between the Evil (the imps, as the composer says) and the forces of Light is raged. Such is the utter intension of this symphony. “The Music is developing as mighty waves, which crests conceal gaping abysses inside them”.
