Music to the performance after A. S. Pushkin’s “Yevgeny Onegin”, op. 71 was created by Sergei Prokofiev in 1936 according to the Moscow Chamber Theatre order. It was the second Pushkin project together with Alexander Tairov (in 1934 the “Egyptian Nights” premiиre was undertaken, when Shakespeare’s Pushkin’s and Bernard Shaw’s texts were compiled in the whole composition). This time Pushkin’s novel in verse was staged by the dramatist Sigizmund Krzhizhanowsky. However, everything was destroyed by the Communist Party, having attacked the Chamber Theatre.

In 1960 the suite “Pushkiniana” was compiled by the conductor Gennady Rozhdestvensky. It was made of the score fragments from Prokofiev’s “Yevgeny Onegin”, so as Vsevolod Meyerhold’s “Boris Godunov” and unrealized Mikhail Romm’s film “Queen of Spades”.
