The First Symphony was completed by Tchaikovsky upto September 1866. Having experienced the critique of his teachers А. Rubinstein and N. Zaremba, Tchaikovsky fulfilled the second edition of the symphony the same year in November. The first middle movements of the symphony were performed in Moscow and Petersburg, but Adagio and Scherzo did not produce а great impression on the society. However, the full variant of the symphony was firstly represented on February 3, 1868. The premiere was held at the Eighth Symphony Assembly of the Russian Musical Society in Moscow, directed by N. Rubinstein. The audience accepted it with triumph.

The third (last) version of the symphony was created by Tchaikovsky in 1874. That exact version was executed in Moscow conducted by М. Erdmannsderfer in 1883. Three years later (1886) it sounded jn Petersburg, conducted by О. Dutsch.

That very year the author described his First Symphony in his letter to the publisher Р.Yurgenson: “Though this composition isn’t mature at аll in many aspects, it looks тоге satiated in content and better than the others, the more accomplished ones”.
