Victor Voloshinov (1905–1960) was educated at The Lysenko Instutute of Music and Drama in Kiev and then later at the Leningrad Conservatoire which he graduated from in 1929 (composition class headed by professor V. Shcherbachyov).

After finishing a post-graduate course in 1932, V. Voloshinov teaches theoretical subjects at the Leningrad Conservatoire and since 1948 — special course of composition. Voloshinov has composed two operas — “Glory” and “Stronger than Death”, two suites for symphony orchestra, for string quartet, a sonata for violin and piano, a number of vocal pieces (two cycles “In the West” and “A Russian Man” are among them), songs and pieces for chorus.

The Concerto for violin and organ was written in 1929–1930. In 1959 the author considerably revised the work. The given arrangement of the Concerto for violin and organ does not have in view any definite type of organ. The Concerto may be performed on the organ having three key-boards and 30–50 registers. The use of instruments with a greater number of voices does not necessarily lead to a real improvement and enrichment of the performance.

As to registering, the organist has to be careful in using mixtures, especially high ones. This limitation, of course, does not refer to solo and, all the more, to culminative expressions of the organ.

The schwellers must be supposed to help the two participants of this romantic dialogue — the violin and the organ — to establish a greater contact.
