Aria with variations BWV 988 (Goldberg-variations, Die Goldberg-Variationen) — 30 variations for harpsichord published for the first time in 1741 as a fourth part of thу series named Clavier Übung by Bach himself. The work was commissioned by Karl von Keyserling, Russian ambassador in Sachsen and was performed for the His Grace by his personal musician, Johann Gottlieb. An opinion exists that the work was designed to be played in the bedchamber of the diplomat who was an insomniac.

Goldberg variations is a most complicated and extensive piece ever written by J. S. Bach for clavier.

Our edition presents an Urtext of the work. The edition is based on studies performed on the first edition that was published in Bach’s lifetime. It is preserved in libraries in Vienna, Dresden, London. Paris, Berlin, Leipzig and Moscow. Marks made by Bach’s handwriting testify that he himself proof read printed copies and corrected them. The unique copy discovered in Paris in 1970 contains, apart from his corrections, guidelines for the performer rendered by the great composer’s own hand.

Until recent times the Urtext of Aria used to come out of print without Bach’s remarks and corrections. This edition for the first time reveals the material based on the thorough research and comparison of many copies (including those hand marked by Bach) Moreover, form the first time in the history of BWV 988 publications the original print copies were used that are preserved Scientific Music Library of the Moscow Conservatoire and in Chekh Museum in Prague.

The edition contains an introduction, detailed comments and many manuscript fragments. All author’s remarks conform strictly to lifetime copies and handwritten comments. The present edition is addressed to concert nusicians, music scientists, Bach editors, teachers, students and whoever is concerned about Bach’s music heritage.

The complexity level corresponds to music colleges, conservatoires, concert performers.
