Among Edison Denisov’s works written for children, there are such films as “The Scarlet Flower” and “The Blue Cup”, as well as the cartoon “Tortilla Turtle”. Music for “The Kid and Karlsson-on-the-roof” was written by Denisov specifically for the radio performance: in some ways, this music was “tailored to order”.

As in his many works for cinema and theater, Denisov fully manifests here his special talent — the ability to convey emotions and feelings that are only indicated in the replicas of the characters. Every musical moment is called to express what is left behind the text. The loneliness of Kid, the cheerful whirring of propeller on Karlsson’s back and his various tricks — all this finds an exact reflection in the sounds.

At the same time, the composer does not try to compose “children’s” music: he creates a symphonic suite, which has its own drama, in which the main characters are endowed with leitmotifs and even leit-timbre. Thus, small listeners are offered not just a fairy tale, but a original musical and dramatic work, thanks to which they receive their first ideas about serious music.
