The pieces “Spring Song” (2001) and “Play” (2013) by St. Petersburg composer Sergei Pleshak are vivid and easily memorable, intonationally close to a child’s musical thinking, without however simplification, as the author retains rich fantasy with rhythm and intonation aspects.

“Play” references us to G. Bizet’s cycle “Children’s Games”, but if the French composer dedicates each piece to a specific game, then in S. Pleshak’s play the imagination of
the performers is not limited by anything: the listener can see a game of tag at the piano, or a race between the first and second parts, or a game of hide and seek when the tonal shifts begin.

“Spring Song”, despite its not quite traditional time signature, is perceived as a cheerful motif that accompanies a traveler — or rather, travelers, as it is an incessant dialogue between the duo members, cheering and supporting each other.

These pieces deserve a place in the children’s ensemble repertoire as well as in the programs of professinal piano duets, and they have gained well-deserved popularity already with the audience.
