Guennady Vavilov (born in 1932) is the great composer being awarded the titles “People's Artist of Karelia”, “Honoured Art Worker of Russia”, professor of the Glazunov State Conservatoire in Petrozavodsk.

Those were such distinguished figures as E. O. Messner, E. K. Golubev, O. A. Yevlakhov to have been his preceptors in the Moscow and St. Petersburg Conservatoire, which he graduated from in 1966. Since that time Vavilov lives and works in Petrozavodsk.

The Sonata № 8 for piano by Guennady Vavilov seems to be the perfect model of the contemporary attitude to the traditional genre, having been formed by the Viennese Classical School (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven) during the 18th century. The following two centuries brought essential metamorphoses to the established construction. Liszt managed to transform usual cycle of several movements to the composition of one movement, though the cyclic features are left rather visible. The Russian composers (Skryabin, Prokofiev, Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Tishchenko, Shchedrin, Slonimsky etc.) searches led to the new elaborating principles to be discovered inside the Sonata. Therefore the seventeen piano sonatas by G. Vavilov created during latest two and a half anniversaries reveal this novel interpretation of the Sonata cycle in such significant aspects as structure, philosophical core, piano sound.
