Preface

The twelve pieces presented comprise the second Notebook for Аnnа Magdalena Bach. Anna Magdalena (1701–1760) was Johann Sebastian Bach's second wife (married him in 1721). There are known two notebooks having her name on the title-page: the first of them dated 1721, the second 1725. It's hard to say, whether or not the notebooks were intended personally for her. But more probably they were home musica1 albums in which J .S. Bach, his wife and sons put down instrumental and vocal pieces. Some pieces of the present collection are by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, the other are by Christian Petzold, one of J. S. Bach's contemporaries. The authorship of the rest of the compositions remains undecided.
In this edition articulation marks, fingering, and dynamics are printed as recommendations, permitting other solutions. All the marks presented in the manuscript are mentioned. In playing ornaments one has to follow the indications put down by J .S. Bach in the Notebook for Wilhelm Friedemann Bach.
