Manuel de Falla (1876–1946) — the Spanish composer and pianist. Не studied in Madrid conservatoire, where his teacher was F. Pedrell. The young composer was very interested in Spanish musical folklore. During the period of 1904–1914 de Falla stayed in Paris, communicating with С. Debussy, Р. Dukas, М. Ravel. According to Falla's initiative there was founded the National Musical Society for the Spanish early and modern music propagation. The achievements of the European music accumulated to the beginning of the 20th century were synthesized in his creation with the Spanish national musical tradition. That was in 1922, when Falla and Garcia Lorca organized the festival of cante jondo, originating from the Andalusian vocal culture, one of the most ancient in Europe. Falla's repertoire includes operas and ba11ets [one of his bal1et premieres was famous “Cocked Hat” (“El sombrero de tres picos”), staged bby S. Dyagilev in London, 1919, piano compositions, so as the ones for guitar and vocal works. Fal1a's last years were passing in Argentina. The Four Pieces for Piano were composed in 1906-1909 and dedicated to Isaac Albeniz, his senior contemporary, whose influence is miraculously embodied in this cycle.
