Gershwin wrote his Preludes in 1923–1926. Those years witnessed the zenith of his fame that had come to the composer after his Rhapsody in Blue. At the apex of his style Gershwin combined jazz expressive music language with the classical simplicity of the form. The present cycle is no exception; it is a compromise between so called ‘light’ and ‘academic music styles.

As almost by habit Gershwin installs Jazz chords and motives into clear form adding transparent linear polyphonic structures (the second Prelude in the cycle is remarkable in this sense together with its distinct Jewish colour).

Listening or playing Preludes one perceives yet another ‘dissonance’ — between brilliant almost Rakhmaninov-like piano texture and simple recreational genres of charlestown or foxtrot.

These pieces gained immense popularity and later were arranged for violin and piano. Orchestra versions of Preludes also exist for different orchestra casts.
