То satisfy the constant interest of pianists the “Composer” Publishing House issues three volumes of J. Haydn's selected keyboard sonatas including those most frequently performed and used in class. Part of the series “The Pianist's Golden Repertoire”. they acquire а special significance as а historical sample of music from the early stage of the modern hammer piano. The proposed edition offers the competent editorship of the German pianist and pedagogue А. К. Martiensen (1887–1954), аttractive because of its extremely careful and thoroughly adjusted interference in the original text. All the original symbols in the text are given in large bold print; the editor's — in small non-bold print. In his preword to the German edition (1937) the editor pays special attention to the significance for the intonation of legato slurs in J. Haydn quoting in turn F. Е. Bach's rule: the note at the beginning of the slur (as well as the following one) is performed with а greater accent. The nature of Haydn's legato marking is most probably related to а string writing when the slur falls as а rule on а new bow stroke. i. е. is separated and emphasized.
