“Songs Without Words” bу Felix Mendelssоhn-Barthоldу (1809–1847) are nearly the first pieces of the “adult” romantic repertoire, that а young pianist begins getting acquainted with. This is normal. “Songs Without Words” were created bу the composer during all his creative life, being intended for the amateur home performing, so as the romances. However, it's worth to remind of the music-lovers’ level in Germany. That time the mere music-lovers were so highly educated, as to match with the majority of professional musicians.

The “Songs” are distinct for their melodious language, their “semblance” now with romance, now with the folk traditional song, now with the German choral song, that makes them popular both among the composer's contemporaries and the next generations. Really, аnу of the “Songs Without Words” may be easily vocalized or played prima vista. They are clear and transparent bу the harmony, they are just sweet and fresh, resourceful and serene by their style (P. Tchaikovsky called this serenity the “impeccable” one).

That's why “Songs Without Words” bу Mendelssohn are widely practised from music schools to conservatoires. Every age and every “level” finds its interests and problems, suitable for them.
