Vladislav Soyfer (1961–2021) was a composer, an arranger and a teacher.
He was born in Kharkiv, Ukraine, lived in Uzbekistan in his childhood, then moved to Russia, where he spent most of his life. He studied composition at the Moscow Conservatory, his tutors were E. Denisov, N. Sidelnikov and others.
Soyfer’s development as a musician was most influenced by private lessons with Ph. Herschkowitz (a pupil of A. Webern and A. Berg). Soyfer has dedicated his musical work to continuing and developing the New Viennese School’s traditions.
Since 2007, V. Soyfer has been living in Costa Rica, where he taught composition, analysis, orchestration and other subjects to young musicians, and wrote music. Most of his compositions were written there. This edition is the first one to present some of those piano compositions that were gathered under the title “Selected” by the composer himself.
Compositions from the Selected piano music by Vladislav Soyfer were not performed till the recent time. In september of 2022, in the Art Library named after A. P. Bogolyubov, “Three Eleven-Bar Bagatelles” were performed for the first time by Varvara Soyfer (the composer’s daughter), and in April of 2023, “Five Motives”. In the same year, “Three Bagatelles” arranged for orchestra by Faradzh Karaev, were presented in Beethoven Hall by the chamber orchestra of the Bolshoi Theatre conducted by Mikhail Tsinman.
