When Sergey Slonimsky, one of the most prominent Russian contemporary composers was asked, why he, being a highbrow symphonic composer, turned to cinema music he gave an unexpected answer: ‘I like prison chanson, there is more truth in it than in patriotic songs or glamour romances’.
It seems that those simple motives known to millions of people are borrowed from the folk music. However it is a brilliant adaptation of the composer style, mosaic made from real songs that were sung at those times. Nobody other than Alexey Kiselev, a Director of Lenfilm, one of the biggest movie studios in Russia being a former ragamuffin, acquainted Slonimsky with this music material.
The parts of the soundtrack is adapted for piano and guitar and offered for your appreciation in the present Album.
