“Lieutenant Kije”, a suite to a film of the same name, op. 60, was written by Sergei Prokofiev and was firstly performed on December, 21, 1934, conducted
by the composer himself. The score was published by the “A. Gutheil” company, in 1935. The key timbre of the suite is cornet-a-piston. Nowadays, this part
in symphonic orchestra is often performed on trumpet. In 2022, a trumpet teacher from the S. S. Prokofiev Saint Petersburg music school, Azamat Latypov, has asked Anzhelika Gabibova, a composer and a graduate of the N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov Saint Petersburg Conservatory, to write a fantasia on the themes from the suite “Lieutenant Kije” for trumpet and piano. The premiere of the fantasia took place in S. S. Prokofiev Saint Petersburg music school, in 2023.
