The composer Sergei Nicolaevich Poddubny (born in 1954) lives in Petersburg. During the years of studying Poddubny got two qualifications — choral conducting at the Culture University and composition at professor Vladislav Uspensky's class of the St Petersburg conservatoire.

Poddubny is the author of symphonic and chamber-instrumental works, so as the opuses for the Russian folk instruments and music for TV stagings. Such compositions as the “Lyrical Divertimento” for flute and symphony orchestra, “Dramatic Capriccio” for violin and symphony orchestra, cantata “Season” for mezzo-soprano and orchestra to the verses by the Lithuanian poets living at the beginning of the 20th century, cantata “Miraculous Hands” (verses by Gleb Selyanin) for baritone, children's choir and orchestra, fantasy “Nocturnal Petersburg” for piano and symphony orchestra, Concerto-toccata for trumpet and folk Russian inatruments orchestra.

Sonata for violin and piano was composed in 1991.  This is one of rare creations by Poddubny stained in expressive, even wicked sinister hints. Dramatic effect and clear graphic form are amalgamated together here. The author feels each instrument's peculiarity, thus making this sonata attractive for both professional and amateur musicians.

The first performance took place on March 6, 1994 at the Peterburgian Composer's house (A. Shirokov and E. Turgel). Later the Sonata was executed in Petersburg. The Petersburgian violist Pavel Popov Performed it over Russia and the USA. The Author dedicated his Sonata to Popov, as the most keen and original interpreter.
