The Loeillet is the dynasty of Frencj musicians. Jean Baptiste Loeillet de Grand was born in 1688. His father was the violinist Pieter (Pierre) Loeillet.

All the compositions by Jean Baptiste were signed by the name “Loeillet from Gand” lest he should have been taken for his cousin, also Jean Baptiste, but known as John Loeillet from London.

The composer's life passed at the Lyons archbishop, where he was engaged to. Loeillet de Gand died young (befor 1729, probably near 1720). His heritage embraces 48 sonatas for flute and basso continuo, published in Amsterdam during the period of 1710–1717 and republished in London during 1712–1722.

The edition by A. Tsypkin reproduces the possible interpretation of melismata and figured bass. The editor did not really aspire after strict scientific exactitude. His main objective was instrumental convenience necessary for fine euphonic performance.
